Face Mask – SON’s Brief
As the use of face masks has become mandatory in some parts of the world, including Nigeria, the Standard Organization of Nigeria has issued guidelines on the essential features of a nose mask.
To stop the spread of the coronavirus in the west African country, states like Lagos, the business capital, Osun state and Cross River state have made it compulsory for residents to wear it in public spaces.

This one has made many tailors and even individuals start making their own masks for public use, as the federal government has advised people not to wear the surgical face masks that are reserved for frontline health workers.
Most of the nose masks are made from fabrics like Ankara, satin, cotton, linen, denim, and other things.
Before you make or buy any face mask, see what SON said it must have:
- It must cover the nose, mouth, and chin.
- It must be a single layer or multiple layers of fabric (non-woven, woven, or knit) with an inner filter.
- It must have a barrier that fits around the head and holds the face mask in place.
- The inner fabric, which will be in close contact with the skin, must be colorless.
- They must sew the multiple layers to hold the inner fabric in place.
- They must adjust it to fit very well over the nose, cheeks, and chin.
The general public should take note of these recommendations by SON.
