Authorities have asked millions of people to stay in their houses as one of the worst storms in decades, Storm Eunice, will be hitting the United Kingdom.

The Met Office has issued a second red weather warning, which is not common to cover London, the south-east and east of England.

A “red warning” means that danger to life from flying debris is already set to cover parts of the south-west of England and south Wales.

Hundreds of schools will be closed, all trains in Wales will be suspended and the army will be on standby.

Forecasters warned that Eunice could bring heavy winds of up to 90mph on Friday, and that it could cause trouble and power cuts.

Eunice is the second storm in a week in the United Kingdom after Storm Dudley destroyed some parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.

The Met Office has issued several weather warnings across the United Kingdom:

  • A red warning of the wind-the highest level of alert-along the coastline of Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset from 07:00 GMT until 12:00 on Friday with wind of up to 90mph
  • They sounded a further red warning for wind in London, the south-east and eastern England from 10:00 until 15:00.
  • Wind gusts of up to 80 mph have been issued for all of England south of Manchester and Wales from 05:00 to 21:00.
  • From 03:00 to 18:00, many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England are under a yellow snow warning.
