UTAG Leaders Striking a balance
University lecturers in Ghana said they would suspend the strike temporarily for negotiations.
This was after they held an emergency NEC meeting to discuss the way forward.
According to UTAG, they suspended the strike up to March 4, 2022, to engage the government.

Last week, they held a meeting between UTAG leaders, the education minister, the labour minister, and others to discuss their issues.
Although the meeting did not settle the strike issue, the University Teachers Association of Ghana promised that they would engage other members to decide on ending the strike.
In a statement that they released, UTAG noted that they had agreed on a roadmap for negotiation between the University Teachers Association of Ghana and the country’s government.
They explained that negotiations would start soon, which they would complete within the specified period.
According to UTAG, their decision is coming on the back of appeals from respected Ghanaians like former Ghanaian President, John Agyekum Kufuor, who is the Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), and Sir Sam Jonah, who is the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
According to the University Teachers Association of Ghana, appeals from the Parliament Education Committee and parents also contributed to their decision.
Despite this, they are hopeful that authorities will meet with them to resolve the salary issue as soon as possible.
The university lecturers’ strike hits week five. This is one of the longest records in recent history.
They demand an entry-level salary of $2,084 for lecturers, compared to the current $997.84 as an entry-level salary – UTAG.
